Lawyers for Net Zero is looking for individuals who have experience in facilitating small groups in a corporate setting, and are comfortable following a set process, to run our ‘Champions Groups’ for in-house lawyers.

The Champions Groups are at the core of our ‘Impact Programme’ which has been designed to support in-house lawyers to empower themselves and make a habit of taking bolder and bolder climate action.

  • We’ve designed our Champions Group process with advice from world class behavioural scientists. It is critical therefore that our Facilitators diligently follow the structure we’ve designed, as well bringing their own personality to the process.

  • Therefore, all applicants need to be happy following a process set by someone else.

  • Our success in enrolling in-house lawyers has led to a large increase in the demand for the Champions Groups and we need more Facilitators to enable our exponential growth.

  • Our existing Facilitators come from a variety of backgrounds.

  • Get in touch with us if you’d like to use your skills as a facilitator to enable in-house lawyers to deliver impactful climate action.

CONTEXT

  • The climate crisis is growing, leading to increasing concern, and many countries and businesses are making net zero pledges. But 90% of organisations are not taking action commensurate with the crisis.

  • To answer this problem, Lawyers for Net Zero has created a network of in-house lawyers who are using their unique position as trusted advisors to their organisation to champion rapid climate action.

  • Our key guidance to in-house lawyers is for them to support their organisations to guard against greenwashing and achieve legitimate net zero.

  • We are working with a group of highly influential individuals to press levers in the system to help maintain a liveable planet for all.

  • To find out more, look at our website and LinkedIn company page.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Our need is for individuals experienced in running small group processes in a corporate setting to facilitate our guided peer-to-peer action groups (Champions Groups) of in-house lawyers.

  • In the Impact Programme, our Facilitators take a group of four participants per group through 3 cycles per year of the Champions Groups. One cycle of a Champions Groups lasts 4 months with the structure being a launch session followed by 4 shorter discussion sessions and then a review session.

  • The facilitation style reflects in-house lawyers need for the sessions to be short and focused. Therefore, we provide the framework for the process and the Facilitator asks questions that invite the participants to engage proactively with the aim for the Champions taking meaningful action in their organisations.

  • To do this, Facilitators need:

    • Ability to quickly create a constructive and trusting atmosphere in the Champions Groups.

    • To be directive where necessary in Groups, e.g. stepping in and moving on the discussion.

    • A nimble mind to adapt to whatever the Champions bring to the session.

    • An understanding of behavioural triggers that lead people to take action.

    • Work during UK business hours

    • Experience of facilitating small groups in large, probably international, companies and public bodies.

  • You don’t need experience in either:

    • Climate issues in large organisations: Good knowledge of sustainable business and climate issues in corporates is preferable but not necessary.

    • Legal knowledge: this programme is about helping the in-house lawyers deliver 'business common sense', guided by our Net Zero Action Principles, and supported by our Knowledge Hub. Therefore legal knowledge is unnecessary.

OUR FINANCIAL SITUATION

  • Lawyers for Net Zero is a start-up non-profit.

  • Virtually all the work in building Lawyers for Net Zero has been done voluntarily.

  • The most important factor in creating impact is to get the in-house lawyers joining the Groups as quickly as possible.

  • Once we have built trust and credibility with the Champions, we are charging them for the programme, and also offer Legal Team options for them to buy into.

  • Additionally, we are also looking to generate income from grant and philanthropic funding.

ONBOARDING AND FUTURE

  • We have a Facilitator onboarding process enabling each new Facilitator to co-facilitate some Champions Groups with our Chief Executive, Adam Woodhall. You be directly interacting with these influential individuals straight away.

  • Facilitators will then run their own Champions Groups through cycles of the Impact Programme. The participant Champions are all brought into the process through Lawyers for New Zero.

PAID WHEN DELIVERING OWN CYCLES

  • Our intention is to pay our Facilitators for the Cycles of Champion Groups they facilitate on their own. We ask you to put in your time for ‘pro-bono’ for the onboarding process.
