Lawyers for Net Zero is a rapidly growing non-profit working with one of the most powerful sectors in UK society: the in-house legal community, to deliver significant climate action. We have a vibrant group of volunteers supporting us, and are looking to add to the volunteer team.

A finalist in The Lawyer Awards 2022 for best ‘Sustainability Initiative’, we already have over 100 in-house Champions, who are active participants in our ‘Impact Programme’, including General Counsels from organisations such as Standard Chartered, E.ON, GSK, Vodafone and Rolls Royce.

The Role – Financial Management Lead (volunteer: 1 - 2 hours per week)

We are looking for a volunteer to support us in shaping our own growth as a non-profit and to guide our financial management as we continue to deliver our programmes to the in-house legal community.

We are at an important juncture and your role will be pivotal in helping us deliver our next steps.

This volunteer position is a consultancy / strategic role.

Core responsibilities:

  • SUPPORT and GUIDANCE on all matters in relation to our finances at Lawyers for Net Zero, including:

    • Being a finance ‘accountability buddy’ to our management team

    • Helping us implement strong controls ethos and review our internal financial workflow systems

    • Providing strategic advice on managing our cash flow

    • Harnessing our relationships with our accountants and bookkeeper

    • Helping us set budgets and forecasts to establish and then maintain our financial health

    • Planning opportune times to scale up

  • Our goal, together, is to ensure we are guided in running our finances optimally and responsibly.

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: most of the practical delivery of this process will be done by others.

    • Your role would be to offer your expertise. You will guide and give feedback, helping steer our plans and processes, which will then be delivered by other members of the core team.

Skills and Experience:

  • Practical experience in working with one or more of

    • Small businesses

    • Non-profits

    • Entrepreneurial start-ups

  • Fluency in English

  • Motivated by the opportunity to volunteer for a leading non-profit working to keep a liveable planet for all.

About you:

  • You are an experienced qualified finance professional who wants to use your skills to contribute positively to the climate agenda.

  • This position would be ideal for a candidate looking for a dynamic volunteering opportunity.

Time Commitment: 

  • 1 - 2 hours on average a week - minimum 6 months commitment, but ideally at least spanning one financial cycle.

  • It might require approx. 2 hours initially as you guide us on setting up new systems.

  • This also could be done as part of pro-bono hours.
